Welcome to the Official Website of the Machapunga-Mattamuskeet Indians of North Carolina
We are honored to welcome you to the digital home of the Machapunga-Mattamuskeet
Indian Tribe of North Carolina—a people deeply rooted in the rich, ancient heritage of
the Algonquian-speaking nations. For generations, our ancestors have inhabited the
Eastern Inner and Outer Banks of North Carolina, as well as the Coastal Plains of
Tidewater, Virginia. These lands carry our stories, our spirits, and our legacy.
Our mission is to preserve and honor the legacy of our people through ongoing
research, the collection and documentation of historical resources, and active education
within our communities. We are committed to uncovering and sharing the often-
overlooked history of North Carolina’s Indigenous peoples—especially those whose
voices have been lost or misrepresented in mainstream narratives.
Through this platform, we aim to promote interest in our Indigenous genealogy and
to empower both tribal members and the wider public with resources that foster greater
awareness, understanding, and respect for our history, culture, and continued
presence. We invite you to explore, learn, and walk with us as we continue the sacred work of our
cultural preservation, truth-telling, and community connection. Together, we ensure the
spirit of the Machapunga-Mattamuskeet people endures—strong, resilient, and proud.
We are still here and never left. We are not extinct.
